Fruto del convenio de colaboración firmado entre el Club Deportivo Zalaeta y la Federación Chilena de Rugby, dos jóvenes de la Isla de Pascua fueron becados por dos meses para jugar en tierras gallegas por este club. Los elegidos fueron Nicanor Machuca Haoa (centro, 16 años, 1,84 – 93 kilos) y Tepito León Ika, (tercera centro, 18 años, 1,83 – 95 kilos).
Desde el primer día sus envergaduras físicas impresionaron; su potencia en el contacto y su manejo de los espacios con balón no dejaron a nadie indiferente. Hay que tener en cuenta que, como nativos de una de las Islas del Pacífico, Nica y Tepito son de raza maorí, tal vez la mejor dotada físicamente para la práctica del rugby y que ha dado tantos y tantos grandes jugadores.
Con el correr de los encuentros Nica y Tepito se han hecho con un sitio indiscutible en el equipo juvenil, al que llegaron al final de la primera vuelta y que había contado sus encuentros por derrotas, cambiando la mentalidad por una disposición ganadora que les ha permitido tutear a los que juegan por el liderato en Galicia.
A finales de febrero Nica y Tepito regresarán a la Isla de Pascua, dejando en A Coruña su segundo club y grandes amigos entre sus compañeros de equipo.
Son dos jugadores y dos historias que se entrecruzan, la de quienes los reciben como uno más de los suyos y la de ellos, que forman su futuro a base de placajes
